5 ways to Brighten your Home for Summer

Sun-filled days, seasonal salads and sweet sorbets… Summer’s here and it’s time to let the sunshine into your home! Here are five simple ways to make it happen.

1. Declutter
If you haven’t done any spring cleaning this year, do a pre-summer clear out instead. Less really is more when it comes to creating a light, bright space and here’s how decluttering expert Marie Kondo suggests you start: “I recommend tidying by category, not by place. For example, instead of deciding that today you’ll tidy a particular room, set goals such as ‘clothes today, books tomorrow.’”

2. Go green
Indoor plants have been on trend for some time and the excellent news – for your home and the environment – is that the trend continues this summer. So stock up on Delicious Monsters, Peace in the Home, Palms, Ferns, Mother in Law’s Tongue, or whatever else takes your fancy – and get busy greening your shelves, side tables, window sills, and every other nook and cranny that needs brightening up.

3. Add cushions and throws
This is one of the easiest ways to add a splash of colour to your living areas, especially if the room you’re tackling is a neutral canvas. Bold floral designs and geometric prints are hot property this summer, so pick out a couple of cushions that resonate with you and your décor style and watch your space come alive.

4. Bring in fresh flowers and fruit
Flowers add instant beauty to any room and can be as simple or as extravagant as you like. If you’re keen to explore your inner florist, choose blooms from a palette that compliments your furnishings and experiment with a variety of different vases. Another idea is to place bowls of fresh summer fruits on your coffee or dining room table or a metallic-coloured tray (rose gold and gold are on trend right now) with beautiful glasses and a jug of ice water filled with combinations of fruit and herbs – watermelon and basil, raspberry and mint, grapefruit and rosemary.
